On January 12th, the Dutch Lewis Carroll Society (het Lewis Carroll Genootschap) will organize a free symposium in The Hague.
This is the second symposium of the Society, which was revived in January 2017, after having being dormant for many years. The symposium will be in Dutch.
The programme:
10.00 – 10.30: Registration and coffee/tea
10.30 – 10.35: Opening and welcome
10.35 – 11.45: Guided tour through the National Library in groups
11.45 – 12.30: Roundtable discussions “Lewis Carroll and me”
12.30 – 13.30: Lunch break (lunch not included; you can buy it there or bring some yourself) / Book market in room A
13.30 – 14.15: “New Wonderland”, lecture by Floor Rieder, who tells about her relation to Alice in Wonderland and the choices she made when illustrating the Alice books
14.15 – 14.30: Showing of an abridged version of the movie ‘Alice’ (‘Neco z Alenky’) by Jan Svankmajer
14.30 – 15.00: “Everything in Wonderland: can our language describe reality?”, lecture by Fedde Benedictus
15.00 – 15.15: Break
15.15 – 15.45: The Society: a short introduction by president Bas Savenije about the current state of affairs, followed by discussion
15.45 – 16.00: Presentation of the new Society’s Magazine
16.00 – 16.30: Presentation of the first publication of the Society: the nonsense poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll in a new Dutch translation, eight existing Dutch translations, and two translations in Afrikaans, with accompanying essay
16.30 Closing
Book market and drinks in room A. Opportunity to buy the new magazine and publication (free for Friends of the society)
