Only three more months until the Victoria and Albert Museum in London will open their long awaited Alice in Wonderland exhibition. Tickets are available since today!
The exhibition explores the “origins, adaptations and reinventions” of the story Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and “charts the evolution of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland from manuscript to a global phenomenon beloved by all ages”.
The exhibition is set up as a theatrical show, which means that there will be theatrical sets, large digital projections and ‘immersive environments’. There will be over 300 objects to explore, related to film, performance, fashion, art, music and photography.
Visitors will first encounter a theatrical interpretation of the rabbit hole to enter. Then, the show is divided into 5 sections:
- The section ‘Creating Alice‘ explores Alice in Wonderland’s origins in Victorian Oxford. It will introduce people, places, and politics that inspired Lewis Carroll when writing his story. You will see among others original Tenniel illustrations and their inspirations.
- The section ‘Filming Alice‘ shows you the development of Alice on screen throughout the 20th and 21st century. Of course, the 1903 film will be included, as will Disney’s cartoon film from 1951 and Tim Burton’s live action movie from 2010.
- In the section ‘Reimagining Alice‘ you can explore amongst others the surrealistic and psychedelic interpretations of the story by illustrators like Salvador Dalí and Peter Blake, as well as the music of The Beatles. Also, you can expect a visual experience Mad Hatter’s tea party with psychedelic and playful digital projections, followed by an invitation to a game of Flamingo croquet.
- Then there is the section ‘Staging Alice‘, that focuses on how the books have been reimagined in the form of dance, music and performance. You can admire amongst others concept designs, set models, props and costumes from several international productions.
- The final section is called ‘Being Alice‘. Here you will find modern-day interpretations of the ‘Alice’ story in the form of art, science, popular culture, and fashion. It includes Japanese sub-culture and designer fashion collections, and photographs of political protests.
The exhibition will end with a step through a digital looking glass in the form of a digital art installation.
Other highlights of the exhibition include amongst others:
- Lewis Carroll’s handwritten manuscript “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground”
- Quinten Massys painting “A grotesque old woman” (The Ugly Duchess)
- Illustrations by John tenniel, Ralph Steadman, Disney and Salvador Dalí
- The photograph “Alice as Pomona”, a photo of Alice Liddell by Margaret Cameron
